Model History
The 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire embodied the fusion of performance and luxury that defined the early 1960s American automobile market. Originally introduced as Oldsmobile’s top-tier personal luxury convertible, the Starfire became a distinct series in 1962, available as both a convertible and a hardtop coupe. Its bold styling featured clean, sculpted lines accented by a full-length brushed aluminum side panel, unique badging, and chrome trim that set it apart from other models in the Oldsmobile lineup. With its wide stance and elegant proportions, the Starfire carried an unmistakable presence.
Under the hood, the Starfire offered power to match its upscale looks. Standard was a 394 cubic-inch “Skyrocket” V8 engine producing 345 horsepower, paired with a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. This combination provided strong performance while maintaining the smooth, refined ride for which Oldsmobile was known. The interior continued the theme of luxury and innovation, with bucket seats, a full-length center console, tachometer, and richly appointed trim that gave the cabin a sporty yet upscale atmosphere.
What made the 1962 Starfire especially attractive was its ability to bridge the gap between performance car and luxury cruiser. It offered drivers an exclusive blend of power, sophistication, and style, cementing its place as one of Oldsmobile’s most memorable achievements.
Brief Description
This 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible is powered by a 394ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and is finished in metallic blue over two-tone blue leather. Equipment includes a power-operated white soft top, aluminum and chrome trim, power steering and brakes, power windows, and an AM radio.
The car was refurbished under prior ownership and was acquired by the CMR Private Collection in July 2020. Subsequent work included paintwork, overhaul of the front suspension (with replacement shocks, springs, and upper and lower control arm bushings), replacement of the brakes and brake lines, replacement of the transmission filter, and fluid changes. The exterior is refinished in Wedgewood Mist metallic blue and is equipped with a power-operated white soft top, a blue top boot, quad headlights, dual exhaust exits, an antenna, and aluminum and chrome trim.
The interior features front bucket seats and a rear bench that are said to have been reupholstered in two-tone blue leather as part of the prior owners refurbishment. Amenities include power windows, a centrally located dash clock, an AM radio, and Starfire-branded floor mats. The two-spoke steering wheel frames a horizontal 120-mph speedometer and a fuel-level gauge, while a tachometer is mounted in the center console. The five-digit odometer shows 63k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under our ownership.
The 394ci V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 345 horsepower. The engine and engine compartment were cleaned, painted, and detailed. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. Steel 14" wheels wear full covers and are mounted with 235/75 Coker American Classic whitewall tires.
