Model History

The 1963 Buick Riviera debuted as one of the most distinctive and elegant American cars of the decade, establishing a new standard in the personal luxury segment. Conceived to compete with Ford’s Thunderbird, the Riviera offered a blend of European-inspired design and American performance that set it apart from its rivals. Its crisp, angular bodywork, hidden headlights, and sharply creased fenders gave it a clean, modern look that was both restrained and commanding, a departure from the chrome-heavy styling of the 1950s. Critics and the public alike praised its appearance, with many considering it one of the most beautiful production cars of its time.

Performance matched the Riviera’s striking looks. Standard power came from Buick’s 401 cubic-inch “Nailhead” V8, delivering smooth yet robust acceleration, while the available 425 cubic-inch option provided even more authority on the road. The Riviera’s chassis was engineered for confident handling and a comfortable ride, making it equally suited to city streets or long-distance touring. Inside, the cabin emphasized driver-focused luxury, featuring bucket seats, a center console, and refined trim that underscored its exclusive character.

What made the 1963 Buick Riviera especially attractive was its seamless combination of sophistication, performance, and style. It redefined Buick’s image and remains an icon of American automotive design.
