Model History
The 1966 Lincoln Continental Convertible embodied elegance, innovation, and presence, standing as one of the most iconic American luxury cars of its era. With its clean, understated design, the Continental set itself apart from the heavily adorned styles of the mid-1960s. Long, crisp body lines, a bold chrome grille, and slab-sided proportions gave the car a commanding yet refined appearance that quickly became a Lincoln hallmark. The 1966 model featured subtle refinements, including a more sculpted body and a redesigned front fascia, but it retained the timeless sophistication that made the Continental instantly recognizable.
What truly set this car apart was its unique convertible configuration. The Continental was the only four-door convertible produced by a major American manufacturer during this time, offering open-air luxury unmatched by any competitor. Its innovative rear-hinged “suicide doors” added both convenience and drama, creating a sense of occasion every time passengers entered or exited. Beneath the hood, a smooth and powerful V8 engine delivered effortless performance, perfectly suited for cruising in comfort and style.
The 1966 Lincoln Continental Convertible appealed to those who desired exclusivity, prestige, and modern design. More than just transportation, it was a statement of taste and sophistication, making it one of the most admired luxury cars of the decade.
Brief Description
This 1966 Lincoln Continental Convertible represents the height of 1960s American luxury — an unmolested survivor that spent over 40 years with its original owner before joining my collection. Showing just around 40,000 original miles, this Continental remains one of the most authentic and meticulously restored examples in existence.
Finished in Tuxedo Black with a white convertible top, this car defines sophistication. Following its acquisition, it underwent a careful four-year restoration, performed primarily in-house by a team with over 50 years of experience specializing in Ford and Lincoln automobiles. Only select outside specialists — such as painters and upholsterers — contributed to the process, while nearly all mechanical, assembly, and detailing work was completed by our own team, who take pride in restoring these cars the right way.
The interior was fully restored to exact factory specifications, using the correct leather and vinyl materials in their original factory placements. The door panels remain completely original, preserving their factory craftsmanship. To perfect their appearance, we sourced new old stock (NOS) factory wood-grain inserts, the exact type originally used by Lincoln in 1966, and carefully installed them into the existing panels. Every grain, stitch, and finish was matched to factory standards, recreating the look and feel of the car as it appeared when new.
Every element of this restoration received meticulous attention:
All chrome was removed and professionally replated,
Every piece of stainless trim was hand-polished to a mirror finish,
The engine compartment and undercarriage were carefully detailed and refinished, and
All gaskets, seals, and finishes were restored to correct factory appearance.
Under the hood, every clamp, hose, and component was restored or replaced with correct-style parts to match factory specifications. The battery and related hardware were properly sourced to replicate the car’s as-delivered appearance, giving the engine bay a true factory-fresh presentation. The factory air conditioning system remains original to the car, properly serviced with the correct Freon, and continues to operate smoothly — adding both comfort and authenticity without distracting from the car’s originality.
Equipped with automatic temperature control, full power accessories, and the unmistakable presence of its iconic suicide doors, this Lincoln delivers the smooth, commanding ride that
defined American prestige in the 1960s. Few automobiles capture the spirit of timeless elegance like a black 1966 Lincoln
Continental Convertible. With its long-term ownership history, original interior components, and expert restoration by lifelong Lincoln specialists, this car stands proudly as one of the finest 1966 Continentals in existence.
