Model History

The 1972 Cadillac Eldorado Fleetwood represented the pinnacle of American personal luxury, combining immense presence, advanced engineering, and timeless elegance. As one of the largest front-wheel-drive cars of its era, the Eldorado Fleetwood offered a commanding stance with its long hood, sharply creased body lines, and wide track, projecting prestige from every angle. The 1972 redesign marked a transition toward more angular, formal styling, with hidden headlights, bold grille treatment, and a sophisticated vinyl landau roof that highlighted the Fleetwood’s exclusive trim.

Under the hood, the Eldorado Fleetwood was powered by a robust 500 cubic-inch V8 engine, providing smooth, effortless performance despite its substantial size. The front-wheel-drive layout allowed for a lower floor and improved interior space, enhancing both comfort and practicality. Suspension tuning and advanced engineering ensured a quiet, composed ride, perfectly suited for long-distance cruising.

Inside, the Eldorado Fleetwood offered a luxurious environment with leather upholstery, deep-pile carpeting, wood-grain trim, and an array of power-operated amenities, including windows, seats, and climate control.

What made the 1972 Cadillac Eldorado Fleetwood especially attractive to the public was its seamless combination of luxury, power, and innovation. It served not only as a means of transportation but also as a symbol of achievement, style, and the apex of American automotive refinement.

Brief Description

This 1972 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible was purchased in 2019 out of California and subsequently underwent a refurbishment that included respraying the exterior in blue, reupholstering the interior in dark blue leather, replating the chrome bumpers, polishing the stainless-steel trim, mounting replacement Auburn whitewall tires, and detailing the engine bay and undercarriage.

Power comes from a 500ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, and features include a power-operated white convertible soft top, 15″ steel wheels with polished covers, front disc brakes, Twilight Sentinel automatic headlights, and an AM/FM stereo with an eight-track player as well as automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, and a power-adjustable front seat.

The body was delivered from the factory in Brittany Blue (29), which was refinished during the recent refurbishment and is complemented by contrasting pinstriping and a power-operated replacement white convertible soft top. Additional exterior features include a blue soft top boot, a remote-controlled left mirror, cornering lights, fender skirts, and chrome bumpers, the latter of which have also been replated.

The 15″ steel wheels feature polished covers and are mounted with Auburn whitewall tires measuring 235/75. The Eldorado featured a torsion bar front suspension and a coil-sprung solid rear axle along with Automatic Level Control and power steering. Braking is provided by power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.

The cabin has been reupholstered and features a power-adjustable front bench trimmed in dark blue leather that is accented by woodgrain trim. Amenities include an AM/FM stereo with an eight-track player as well as a rear window defroster, cruise control, a power trunk-lid release, automatic climate control, Twilight Sentinel automatic headlights, and power windows. The trunk has also been reupholstered.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer (at the time of sale), showed 30k miles.

The 500ci V8 features a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor for a factory output of 365 horsepower, which is routed to the front wheels via a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. The seller notes that the engine was recently resealed and the battery and air filter were replaced.

Accolades
